Suppose
a person awaits the arrival of a friend she last saw in her teen age from out
of town at a train station, and all of a sudden discovers that the friend's
arrival would take longer than anticipated due to unforeseen but inevitable
reasons, the person sits patiently at the station longing for the reunion and
patiently distracts herself with reading a newspaper, a few peeps at
other people waiting at the station or simply reminiscing and hoping to share
such fond memories with the friend as soon as she hops off the train.
Before she realises she had spent a
larger part of the day at the station but all that is erased with a
throttling sound of the approaching train and a large scream and hug as the
visitor alights.
Patience
is demonstrated by deliberately distracting oneself whilst you hang on your
object of focus. Patience is often confused with absence of complaint in the
face of obvious discomfort. but the definition varies as there are many tribes
and tongues that exists world over. Whilst a wife whose husband cheats on her ,but
she pretentiously ignores and still attends to his physical and emotional needs
believes that she is a model of patience, the employee who feels slighted by
her boss's remarks after taking his fall and saving the company's stock from
crashing, only not to be appreciated with no form of pecuniary compensation is
asked by her colleagues if her middle name is patience as they still do not
understand why she's still hanging on to the firm or the man who gives a free
passage of way to a woman in traffic and gets no "thank you"
Whilst
so many thoughts exists as to what exactly is patience she exhibits patience in
this case. Something else must be required to make one's lack of complaint
virtuous. It's because a circumstance is
uncomfortable for someone that we find her refusal to complain remarkable and
thus regard her as patient.
Patience
is simply defined as "waiting without complaint," patience
might seem to be a morally insignificant trait.
What's
so virtuous about not complaining? In itself, not complaining carries no particular
virtue.
So
to improve the initial definition above, to be patient is to endure discomfort
without complaint. This calls into play some other virtues, specifically,
Self-control, humility, and generosity.
A
virtue is a trait or quality deemed to be morally excellent and thus is valued
as a foundation of principle and good moral being. Patience can make us better
people. The definition of the word is to tolerate delay implying self control
and forbearance. When we say "patience is a virtue" we are exposing
our moral values and expressing the importance of patience as a foundation of
principle. So to answer the question patience is not a virtue until it truly
becomes a virtue and knowing how diverse the spectrum of individualism is I'm
sure patience is a vice(opposite of virtue) to some. Patience is a necessity
for a happy existence and that is why the phrase is so often used.
Patience
is a virtue because it is developed through difficulties and troubles. When men
or women lack understanding of the order of God, it is impossible for them to
accept nor understand God's way.
Hmmmm...Patience is truly a virtue! Now,I feel guilty about always putting my disinterest and anger forth! Lord, give me the grace to be patient in the face of ugly situations...Amen. Thanks for this blog Pholu,it's fast becomes a place to visit..encouraging and repairing!..May God bless you.
